Gauging the market: Mathoothe says government is still gathering intel on the 24-hour economy PIC PHATSIMO KAPENG

MAUN: Government has intensified efforts to transform Botswana into a 24-hour economy, with extended liquor trading hours emerging as one of the first major policy experiments aimed at reviving nightlife and boosting tourism.

The Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship recently revealed that some of the momentum towards this shift was backed by research conducted by the World Bank.

The research showed some weaknesses in the diversification of the tourism sector, including low tourism visits, shorter stays and weak infrastructure amongst others.
