Govt gets P10.5 bn lifeline from AFDB

After 17 years of self-reliance, Botswana has finally succumbed to the global credit crisis and made its first borrowing to support its unusual budget deficit.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) on Wednesday announced it had approved a US$1.5 billion (P10.5 billion) loan to Botswana to help the country in that regard.

Describing Botswana as one of the best managed economies in Africa, AfDB president Donald Kaberuka said the loan fell within the framework of the recently approved strategy by the Bank to provide support to member countries affected by the global financial crisis and was the largest such facility ever granted by the Bank.
