Government has allocated P85 million for the acquisition of 5,570 hectares of Kweneng District's tribal land for incorporation into Gaborone, as the swollen capital city seeks room for expansion.

President Ian Khama's pronouncement in his State-of-the-Nation address in Parliament on Monday followed cabinet minister Nonofo Molefhi's revelation on the expansion of Gaborone earlier this year.

It is expected that the money will primarily go towards compensation of those affected by the acquisition. The compensation, however, is only for the developments on the land, as government does not pay for tribal land. Apart from the P85 million, government had already secured P300 million for the cost of relocation of affected villagers, which includes servicing of plots.
