Good Metal Prices, New Skills Spur Interest In Old mines

FRANCISTOWN: At a time when the Department of Mines wanted to seal the shafts for safety, a combination of the rise in metal prices and new technologies has prompted renewed interest among mining companies in abandoned gold mines in Monarch, just outside Francistown.

The Department of Mines' Principal Engineer Ofentse Ditsele says a number of companies have shown interest in looking for gold in the abandoned underground shafts and dump tailings. 

Their submissions have resulted in the department halting a rehabilitation programme, which included the backfilling of the old mine shafts and fencing-off of the areas as they pose a danger to people and animals.
