'Go to S/Phikwe for the best bacon!'

SELEBI-PHIKWE: In addition to copper-nickel, this monoculture town will soon become famous for bacon and other types of pig meat, thanks to Badikolobe Piggery Cooperative that is set to establish a P4-million pig abattoir and processing plant here.

Before the project to capture it for industrial use is completed, the hateful sulphur smog should become less obnoxious to the nose and health when it is tempered with the pleasant aroma of pork, especially speke, the crispy, 'smaakgenoet' and delectable fried pig skin beloved of Balete, Bakgatla and Afrikaners.

The co-op has been officially registered and is currently in the process of acquiring land. The chairperson of the interim committee of the project is former Deputy Mayor of Selebi-Phikwe, Rosemary Mukwewa. She says the co-op has 32 members made up of pig farmers and aspiring pig farmers in the SPEDU region. The project is actually a coup for the Selebi-Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) that has been catching a lot of flak for non-delivery lately. It also coincides with the lifting of an import ban on meat and meat products from the Bobonong/Madinare/Selebi-Phikwe region (Zone 7) by the World Organisation for Animal Health after it imposed the restrictions for foot and mouth disease (FMD) in 2006.
