Food Crisis, High Prices Won't Influence Beer Sales - Mackay

JOHANNESBURG: Food shortages and rising prices will not significantly affect beer sales as the beer price increases are usually relatively lower than food inflation, SABMiller group chief executive officer (CEO) Graham Mackay said last Thursday.

Speaking in a video-conference from London to announce the group's full year results for all of its 60 global operations, Mackay said although there might be diversion of income to food due to the food inflation, their sales might soar, as it will accommodate beer price increases.

"Food prices have skyrocketed since the beginning of the year and most businesses are going to be affected, but we believe demand for beer will still be strong. Affordability, especially in low income countries, might be compromised to some extent but generally the inflationary environment should be good for our business."
