FMD outbreak pulls down BMC throughput

The outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Ngamiland has adversely affected the Botswana Meat Commission's (BMC) Francistown abattoir.

"The outbreak is a major blow to the abattoir," said BMC Chief Executive Officer Dr Motshudi Raborokgwe. "What makes matters worse is that the Bobirwa Zone 7 area is still closed for Francistown."

The BMC issued a press release earlier in the week stating that due to the very few numbers of cattle entered into quarantine for non-EU markets, opening for cattle in EU-approved zones had been brought forward to January.
