First Diamonds from Ghaghoo delayed until 2014

*Over $31m spent on construction so far

Junior miner, Gem Diamonds has announced that first production from Ghaghoo mine in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) would be delayed until the first half of 2014 following an accident that killed two employees.

According to the company, first diamonds from Ghaghoo mine were scheduled to be recovered in 2013 at an initial rate of 100,000 carats per year, rising to a peak steady  production of 780,000 carats per year. Two contractors recently died when the ground collapsed at the mine. "The company announces with great regret that an incident, involving the collapse of ground at the face of the tunnel development in adverse ground conditions, has occurred at the Ghaghoo mine which has resulted in two fatalities to contractors on the site.
