EU, SADC trade talks head for final hurdles

European Union representatives say negotiations over agriculture and other sensitive goods stand between it and SADC states in the dash to finalise a full Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) before the expiry of a key provision.

Of the seven states in the regional bloc, Botswana and Namibia, stand to immediately lose duty and quota free access to the EU next October should the SADC group and the EU fail to seal a full EPA.

Last week, local EU officials told Mmegi Business that after the recent September round of negotiations, the two parties had moved closer to finalising the nine-year long talks. The officials however said the original target of a full EPA by December would be difficult to meet.
