EU intervention extends BCL Mine's operations

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The intervention of the European Union's (SYSMIN)facility System for Stabilising Export Earnings from Mineral Products has played a pivotal role in the continuation of the operations of BCL Mine during financially difficult periods in the 1990s and early 2000s.

This came through last week when the Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Botswana, Paul Malin and Heads of European Union member states represented in Botswana visited the EDMS programme in Selebi-Phikwe. The entourage went on an underground tour of BCL Mine and the smelter and visited Letsibogo Dam to hear about (SPEDU) activities and the results of environmental assessment studies of BCL smelter emissions.

SPEDU is the Selebi-Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit is examining means of extending the life of BCL Mine that has almost been the single bedrock of the economy of the town to-date and seeking ways of diversifying sources of employment and wealth in an ecologically balanced manner.
