Eskom is facing its own supply challenges

Eskom, which was recently providing more than two thirds of local electricity, will cut its Botswana supplies to zero in the event of South African loadshedding and not by 10% as executives said recently, BusinessWeek has learnt.

Eskom has already taken the drastic move, cutting its supplies to zero last Thursday in the midst of loadshedding in South Africa. Both Eskom’s CEO and chairman had previously said supplies would be reduced by 10% in cases of acute shortfalls in South Africa.

Since last week, Eskom has dropped its supplies from an average of 300MW - one third contractual and the balance on auction -owing to power shortages in that country. Local peak demand of about 580MW is outstripping maximum domestic generation of 310MW and average Eskom imports of 100MW. However, on Wednesday, Eskom officials told BusinessWeek that exports to Botswana could drop to zero in the event of shortfalls in South Africa.
