Electricity tariffs go up

Power tariffs will go up by between seven and 20 percent next month after a two-year freeze.

A statement from the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources released over the weekend says the increment has been effected in a way that will reduce its impact on low-usage households and small-scale businesses.

Besides, the hike is meant to be an incentive to use electricity efficiently. The tariff for domestic customers consuming up to 200kWh and small business using up to 500kWh will be adjusted upward by seven percent. The tariff for domestic and small business above these levels will be adjusted upwards by 10 percent according to the ministry. The statement says energy and maximum demand (capacity) tariffs for medium and large business will be increased by a flat rate of 10 percent. The rates for government installations will be increased by a flat rate of 20 percent and water pumping by 10 percent. Fixed administration fees, which covers billing costs and payment of commissions to electricity vendors will be increased from P51.17 to P66.53 for business and government users.
