Diamond exports soar to P24 billion

The country's exports of rough and polished diamonds reached P24.4 billion for the eight months ended August 2011, representing more than 88 percent increase on figures for the corresponding period last year.

Preliminary Bank of Botswana (BoB) statistics released this week underlined the robust performance of the country's diamond sector thus far this year. The exports up to August eclipse all previous annual diamond export figures, including the record P21.7 billion for 2010.

At P3.6 billion, BoB estimates for diamond exports during August are approximately 81 percent higher than August 2010, although slightly lower than the P3.9 billion recorded in July 2011.
