Debswana to cap production at 30m carats

Debswana Diamond Company plans to cap production at around 30 million next year up from 27 million carats in 2011, a De Beers' official has revealed.

In a telephone interview with Mmegi last week, De Beers' executive director,  Stephen Lussier, said Debswana, which has a capacity to produce 33 million carats, will not go beyond 30 million in line with the company's new policy of  'keeping the goods in the ground' in a bid to extend the mines' lifespan.

"Debswana, which supplies the bulk of our production, will increase output by about 20 percent this year to 27 million carats.
