Debswana has produced 7.4 million carats of rough diamonds in the first four months of this year and is targeting 25 million carats for 2011, a five percent increase from last year's production as the world market recovers with both demand and prices rising.

Addressing external stakeholders in Gaborone this week, Managing Director Jim Gowans said despite minor production challenges in the first quarter of the year, the company was poised to achieve its target production this year as productivity gradually improved with the implementation of a new strategy dubbed Debswana 2013.

"On a year-to-date basis, the company has sold about 7.3 million carats of rough, bringing in about P7.3 billion in revenue," Gowans said. "Revenue was significantly influenced by firming diamond prices which have risen by an average 37 percent per carat in the period."
