FRANCISTOWN: Debswana's Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa mines have set a new record in their 35 years of diamond mining, the general manager, Sebetlela Sebetlela said yesterday.

"In the 2006 production year, we managed to set a new production record by recovering about 18.6 million carats. This is a commendable record in our diamond mining history," said an elated Sebetlela.

Although the Debswana group results are yet to be officially announced, Sebetlela has also said that preliminary results indicate healthy recovery levels with all four mines recovering a total of about 31 million carats. The three diamond mines of Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa's previous highs were about 17.5 million carats in 2003.
