De Beers installs hi-tech equipment

De Beers has installed extensive new diamond sorting equipment worth P69 million at the new Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) building ahead of its official opening early next year.

The installation of new equipment, which comprises 39 sorting machines, is another step closer to DTCB becoming the largest and most sophisticated rough diamond sorting and valuing operation in the world.

DTC Botswana, which is an equal partnership company with seats shared equally between the Government of Botswana and De Beers, is scheduled to start operations next year, valuing in excess of 36 million carats per annum. Said the company's Managing Director, Brian McDonald: "This is another major milestone in the establishment of DTC Botswana and will help to ensure that the company becomes the catalyst in building a sustainable downstream diamond industry in Botswana."
