Credit growth sinks further

Annual credit growth, or the pace of lending by banks to households or individual borrowers, reached negative 2.2 percent in May, as lenders maintained tight risk assessments, while the economy cramped borrowers’ ability to take up new loans.

The negative credit growth technically means that in May, borrowers were paying back more than they were taking up new loans.

The May position is down from a negative 1.5 percent in April and 0.02 percent in March.
