Corporate chief emphasises importance of credit business

The chief executive officer of Credmark, Nkosi Mwaba has said that the success of credit experts will contribute immensely to the success of the business in Botswana. Speaking at the 2007 National Credit Convention on Wednesday in Gaborone, Mwaba said the business is showing significant growth in Botswana and with active participation in new initiatives and a common vision to empower the sub-sector, it will soon gain the recognition it deserves.

He added that the success will in turn create a platform for a more successful, diversified and sustainable economy. He pointed out that the business community has begun to realise the true value of the credit department and its contribution to business and economic development in Botswana.

The theme of the 2007 National Credit Convention is 'empowering the credit profession'. Mwaba said that a lot has been done and said about credit management as a business discipline and how it impacts on the performance and sustainability of companies and organisations. "This particular convention, however, focused on the individual. We are here to share knowledge and exchange ideas with our peers and leading professionals in the industry," he said. Traditionally, credit management has been a basic accounting function with little or no recognition or reward. He lamented that individuals who aspire to become leaders in the field have often been discouraged by the lack of appreciation of the profession.
