Coal miners cautioned against pollution

FRANCISTOWN: The mushrooming of coal mines in the country will bring greater economic gains and diversify the country's diamond led economy, but may pose a threat to the environment and the climate.

The General Manager of Air Botswana, Sakhile Reiling said this when she addressed executives from various mining companies at the Botswana Chamber of Mines (BCM) bi-annual meeting held at Tati River Lodge last week.

Reiling said that of late there have been concerns by various organisations in the international community who believe the use of coal as fossil fuel damages the environment. She therefore said that various coal mining companies operating in the country must come up with enhanced technological developments and innovations that address environmental threats posed by coal mining. "The local coal mining industry should also come up with innovations that encourage cleaner ways of utilising coal," she said.
