Co-ops savings surge above P120m

SEROWE: Officially opening the International Day of Cooperatives in Serowe over the weekend, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcus Makgato-Malesu said Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS) have mobilised P120 million in savings.

She added that they had disbursed loans to their members amounting to P123 million by the end of the last financial year.

"This is a positive contribution to the economy and it defies the stereotype that Batswana are consumers who defeat the culture of saving," she said. Most successful SACCOS are institutionally-based,  comprising of mine workers and government ministries.  "It is now time that we see community-based SACCOS, for instance, formed by elderly people saving a portion of their pensions," she added.
