Botswana's 10 casinos raked in P191.9 million in revenues in 2009/10, earning government P18.2 million in levies during a year in which the recession tore through disposable incomes and lowered employment levels in the economy.

Gross revenues for the casino and gaming industry's 10 players rose by four percent from the P184.9 million earned in 2008/09, according to the Casino Control Board (CCB)'s recently released Annual Report for 2010.

The higher earnings for the industry came during a period when labour intensive sectors such as mining and textiles shed approximately 3,000 and 6, 000 jobs respectively, amid sector-wide industrial suspensions, scale-downs and closures.
