Call for SB to mainstream gender into statistics

Game Makondo has suggested that one way of mainstreaming is to establish a gender statistics unit at SB. The principal gender officer at WAD was speaking in Gaborone on Tuesday at the commemoration of African Statistics Day and pre-launch of Statistics Botswana. She said establishing a gender unit at SB will enhance provision of authentic baseline information for gender without reliance on external expertise and opportunity to sufficiently estimate gender indicators. She said Botswana still lags behind in development of gender sensitive indicators.
She said collaborative efforts between SB predecessor, Central Statistics Office (CSO) in conducting the Gender Based Violence Indicator survey provided insights on the magnitude of the problem in Botswana. Makondo said gender and development cuts across all areas and therefore provides opportunities to identify the gender gaps.
