Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Mining Investment Company (MIC), which will manage government's shareholdings in several mining companies ensuring enhanced legal, financial expertise and returns.

Government has varying levels of shareholdings in Botswana Ash, Tati Nickel Mining Company, BCL Mine, Debswana and Morupule Colliery which represent the cream of mining companies in Botswana. By establishing a mining investment company, Botswana will follow the example of other progressive governments whose investments in mining companies have been shifted from central government to a specialised unit.

On Wednesday, Department of Mines' Acting Director, Gabotshwarege Tshekiso, said the proposed mining investment company was part of the restructuring of the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources. He said a front-runner business development office would be established as an interim arrangement before full establishment of the investment company.
