Butcheries retrench as braai ban hits sales

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Most butcheries here have been forced to cut down their workforce as the effects of the local government order to ban the sale of cooked meat or use of braai stands at such premises begins to bite.

Most butchery owners in this mining town say they have been forced to retrench their employees owing to a sharp drop in sales. Some entrepreneurs have reduced their workforce by more than 70 percent, while in some instances owners have resorted to running their businesses without workers.

The Selebi-Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) has reminded butcheries that they should not allow clients to braai meat on the premises. Local authorities have been enforcing the law, prompting an outcry among butchery owners.
