Business confidence falls - survey

Botswana's business confidence fell in the first half of the year, but conditions are expected to improve from the second half into 2012 largely on the back of continued recovery of mining exports, a survey conducted by the Bank of Botswana shows.

The survey shows that business confidence fell as the survey was conducted at a time when businesses were worried about the impact of lower government spending as announced in the national budget statement and the unprecedented public sector strike that lasted eight weeks.

However, the survey results do not fully factor in the impact the strike that ended recently because it was conducted before the full extent of the disruption, including its impact on consumer purchasing power, became apparent, the bank says.
