BURS guarded on extension as deadline elapses

Thousands of workers thronged Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) offices last Friday in an eleventh hour bid to register for individual Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), amid fears of massive penalties for defaults.

Yesterday, the tax agency was non-committal on whether the June 30 deadline would be further extended, leaving those yet to register in limbo. The BURS had originally given every worker earning P3,000 per month and above until May 31 to register for TIN, under a new regulation designed to enhance accountability for taxation by placing it at individual level.

On public pressure, the BURS subsequently extended its deadline for registration to June 30, while warning that non-compliance with the requirement to register would attract penalties of up to P10,000."Registration is a continuous process as in the case where someone was earning below P3,000 and after the deadline is promoted to earn above P3,000, that person should come forward to register," said a BURS official yesterday.
