Budget: BOCCIM Wants Contingency Power Plan

When he takes to the National Assembly podium this afternoon, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Baledzi Gaolathe will not only read the numbers that make the Botswana budget.

On top of the lion share budget for education and HIV/Aids, Gaolathe is going to tell parliament that inflation is out of control and that high oil prices remain a threat to imported inflation.

From a business community perspective, the minister has to tell the country about the electricity situation, which if not addressed, will affect the GDP numbers next year. The Botswana Confederation of Commerce Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM) said on Friday that it expected the minister 'to give a detailed contingency plan of how the looming power crisis will be addressed before major power projects turn on their switches in 2010'.
