BTC privatisation to exclude backhaul

The Minister of Communications, Science and Technology Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has revealed that government plans to exclude Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC)'s countrywide spread backhaul from the privatisation process.

She said one option was to create an entity that will be responsible for the backhaul to service all the operators in the telecommunicatios sector including BTC after it has been privatised.

"I had to convince a lot of people who did not agree with me on this issue," she said at the launch of the Seacom and Abari Communications  deal in Gaborone this week that will see Botswana linked to Europe through a high capacity undersea fibre optic cabling.
