BTC gets service -neutral licence

Landline monopoly, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has become the first telecommunications provider to be awarded a service-neutral licence under the new licensing regime.

BTC applied for a service-neutral licence last year immediately after a policy sanction to further liberalise the telecommunications industry.

The new framework allows the corporation to provide mobile telephony, fixed telephony and Internet services under one licence.  The 15-year service-neutral licence allows BTC to go mobile and bring to three the number of cellular phone service providers in the country.
