BTB Gets Niche Market In Desert Race

The Botswana Tourism Board (BTB) has found a niche market through the annual Toyota Kalahari 1000 Desert Race. BTB marketing manager, Joe Motse said the motor race assists them to diversify their tourism menu.

He said that Botswana tourism activities have been concentrated in the  northern parts of the country where there is the Okavango Delta, big game and Tsodilo Hills. But the annual off road race has enabled BTB to stimulate tourism in the southern part of the country, by taking advantage of the spacious desert. Motse said they want to increase activities in the desert. He was speaking on Friday at the occasion to thank sponsors for the annual event. The sponsorship night was held at the Gaborone Sun Hotel. It was co-hosted by the BTB and the Four Wheel Drive of Southern Africa.

Motse said the race does not only provide entertainment but has immense socio-economic benefits to the country. "Business establishments have recorded an increase in sales during the weekend of the race. These include accommodation facilities, food outlets, fuel stations and the informal sector," he said.
