MAUN: Botswana Power Corporation Lesedi needs P250 million for the national rollout of Renewable Energy (RE) to rural villages in Botswana, BPC Lesedi's General Manager, Walter Kgabung, said at a briefing of stakeholders here last Wednesday.

Kgabung said the project, which is not for profit, would be funded though equity and loans. He told the Monitor in an interview that so far they had invested P20 million on the programme and were looking forward to funding the balance through loans.

BPC Lesedi is a joint venture between BPC and Electricite de France (EDF) that is specifically mandated to undertake rural electrification in Botswana. The company targets to connect RE to 25% of villages that are not grid-electrified, 49 % of unconnected households in grid electrified villages and all of the country's 99 settlements which are not electrified.  Kgabung said BPC Lesedi had adopted a franchise model that involved private sector participation as partners. The franchisees bought the franchise for P200,000, undertook installations and set up the energy shops to sell BPC Lesedi products.
