Botswana's mining boom boosts BBS fortunes

Botswana's largest mortgage society, the Botswana Building Society (BBS) this week announced record profits partly powered by booming mining in the northern part of Botswana.

BBS Head of Corporate Affairs Sipho Showa says in a statement that the bank achieved a record profit of P58 million during the financial year ended March 2007, which is an increase of 88 percent over the previous financial year's profit of P31 million.

Quoting BBS Chief Executive Pius Molefe, Showa says the record results were a culmination of interventions, such as the introduction of new products and services and increased dedication of staff to delivering quality service.  Molefe says the public also continues to access the Society's mortgage products which are reasonably priced.
The Chief Executive adds that growing mining activity in the north of Botswana has fuelled the appetite for mortgages from which the BBS is benefiting.
