Botswana stagnant in governance rankings

Deterioration in human rights and citizen participation has resulted in a stagnation of delivery of goods and services to citizens by both the public and private sectors over the past few years.

The 2009 Ibrahim Index of African Governance says for the third year running, Botswana has been ranked fourth from 53 African countries.

From the four broad categories used to measure governance in the Index, Botswana slipped by 10 points in the Participation and Human Rights category, leading to the country's ranking to become stagnant despite improvements in the other three categories.The Ibrahim Index measures the delivery of public goods and services to citizens by governments and non-state actors across 84 indicators of governance.
