Botswana slips in world travel, tourism rankings

Botswana has slipped 12 places in this year's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, with unfavourable aviation services, red tape and inadequate transport infrastructure pulling the country behind its peers.

Authored by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the biennial Report is an authoritative assessment of the travel and tourism competitiveness of 139 countries, drawing data from the WEF's annual Executive Opinion Survey, publicly available sources, international organisations, as well as institutions and experts.

From a ranking of 79 in 2009, the 2011 Report released yesterday pegged Botswana at 91 in the world and fifth in sub-Saharan Africa behind leaders Mauritius, South Africa, Namibia and Cape Verde.
