The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has struck off two aviation safety concerns for Botswana, involving operations of aircraft and their airworthiness, in a major step towards growth of the sector.

Since 2013, ICAO had listed Botswana as having two ‘Significant Safety Concerns’ (SSCs), which had retarded the growth of civil aviation in Botswana, as the country was unable to certify more airlines for its skies.

The failure to secure ICAO safety requirements had also presented the threat of a ban by Europe, which could have instructed its citizens not to travel on Botswana registered aircraft. This in turn would have left Air Botswana unfairly exposed to competition from South African airlines presently operating in the country.
