Botswana ready to become new diamond centre

The stage is set for Botswana to become the world's next diamond trading hub, cutting and polishing 500 million dollars' worth of diamonds per year between now and 2010.

Speaking on his return from the Antwerp Diamond Conference that took place in Belgium last week, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Kago Moshashane says the country has the potential and capacity to become the next diamond centre, although traditional markets like Mumbai, Tel-Aviv, Antwerp and Amsterdam will retain their share.

Questions had been raised about the viability of the fledgling African industry, which faces stiff competition from India and China and currently lacks the physical and financial infrastructures available elsewhere.
