Botswana imports P200m horticultural produce monthly

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Only half of the 3, 000 hectares of land that has been allocated to horticulture in Botswana is being utilised, but the country imports the bulk of its demand, a LEA official has said.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting to unveil their Strategic Plan for 2010/13   last week, LEA Senior Manager (North), Anthony Mokobi advised Batswana to utilise opportunities that exist in the agricultural sector particularly in horticulture as production accounts for 46 percent of local demand. He revealed that Botswana spends P200 Million on imports for horticultural produce a month and more needs to be done on the sector.

The LEA strategic plan for 2010/13 is focusing on developing the sector after a  recently conducted study indicated that 51 percent of locals were interested in Agriculture, followed by Manufacturing and Services at 20 percent and tourism at nine percent.
