November 21 marks Africa Industrialisation Day, which was commemorated by the Ministry of Trade and Industry yesterday.

This day provides African countries with an opportunity to devise strategies to enhance the efficiencies and sustainability of their individual energy resources in order to enable them to trade competitively in the international arena

The development of the energy sector is a priority item under the agenda of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and is an indispensable resource in driving the wheels of industry worldwide.Giving a keynote address at the commemoration in Gaborone yesterday, the Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Vincent Seretse, said this year's theme, Tackling Energy Poverty in Africa - Addressing Energy Challenges for Industrialisation, should motivate and inspire the country to double efforts to ensure sufficient energy resources to drive all sectors of the economy.  "Currently, our industry alone consumes about 40 percent of all commercial energy," Seretse said.  "As Botswana, we import most of our energy resources, and it is important to work on strategies and programmes that will ensure that we attain national energy security."
