Botala’s Leupane secures key approvals

New era: The country is rapidly transitioning to renewable energy and the Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park is expected to be vital centre for both Botswana and the region FILE GENERIC INTERNET PIC

Botala Energy has secured environmental approval for its Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park near Palapye, on which it intends to develop a solar plant of up to 500MW and a 200MW Coal-Bed Methane-powered power station.

Besides the solar and gas plants, also approved in the environmental licence are supportive batteries for energy storage, gas generators or turbines to provide baseload electricity, and transformers to connect to the national grid.

The approval also includes a photovoltaic solar panel manufacturing plant for which a Special Economic Zone Licence was granted in March, as well as plants Liquefied Natural Gas and Compressed Natural Gas as well as the beneficiation of minerals such as copper.
