Bonyongo appointed new Debswana boss

Debswana has appointed the chief operating officer, Balisi Bonyongo as managing director, effective January 2014. He replaces Canadian Jim Gowans whose three-year contract expires next month.

Gowans was appointed managing director in January 2011 with a mandate to optimise and position Debswana's operations for continued profitability and growth. His successor, Bonyongo has worked for Debawana for 20 years. Before he was promoted to chief operating officer last year, he was Jwaneng Mine general manager.

He has served as commissioning manager of the Aquarium Project at Jwaneng Mine and corporate strategy manager at Debswana head office. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Leeds University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town.
