Lobatse: The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) is optimistic that it will be re-listed in the lucrative European Union (EU) beef market in the near future.

CEO David Falepau told journalists on Tuesday that they had done a lot of improvement since being de-listed for failure to comply with set requirements almost six months ago.He said the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) had completed an audit of the BMC and re-licensed to export to all other markets except the EU, owing to few outstanding requirements, among them traceability of slaughtered animals.  The BMC was de-listed from the lucrative European market following inspections by the EU's Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) in January this year that revealed technical and compliance issues that had to be addressed. DVS was expected to conduct a re-order of the BMC on Wednesday after which, if satisfied with the outcome, it would make an application to the EU for re-listing.

Falepau said what was not known was the process the EU might put the BMC through for consideration for re-listing. They may make a decision based on information provided by DVS or come to Botswana to carry out their own investigations.
