Billionaire ups stake in local tourism firm

The billionaire Tollman family empire with hotel and leisure companies across the world has purchased more shares in Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), listed tourism concern, Wilderness Safaris, increasing its stake to 35 percent.

The business empire founded by South African born 83-year-old patriarch, Stanley Tollman, bought the shares through Wine Investments, an investment company for the family.In a statement released last week, Wilderness said that Wine Investments Limited has purchased an additional 7.28 percent shareholding from Capital Africa Limited (CAL), a private equity fund, as well as from others in January 2013.

"The transaction has taken Wine investments' shareholding in Wilderness to slightly below 35 percent. CAL has now disposed of its entire holding in the Company," read the statement.In June last year, the Tollman family spent about P37 million to increase its stake in Wilderness Safaris, by five percent from 20.92 percent to 25.92 percent. Wine Investments is a longstanding shareholder in Wilderness and has always been the largest minority shareholder. The Tollman family wholly owns the Travel Corporation, which operates in 60 countries around the world and has over 25 global award-winning brands. Now based in the UK, the Tollman family is in the travel and hotel business, owning several landmark hotels and successful hotel management companies around the world.
