BHC holds discussions with tenants

FRANCISTOWN: Hundreds of tenants gathered at the Civic Centre on Tuesday to discuss problems with their landlord, the Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC). During the meeting, BHC senior estates manager, northern region, Olefile Segokgo warned tenants that the terms and conditions of lease agreement must be adhered to. He stated that every three years, tenants must come forward and renew or terminate their leases because automatic renewal of leases is not condoned.

He reminded the tenants that developments undertaken in compounds should be done with the permission of BHC. He warned tenants about unpaid rentals saying that it will lead to repercussions.

"The rental money should be paid in advance. There are people who have unpaid areas and so we urge them to come forward and see us. That will avoid situations where the houses get locked up or legal action," said Segokgo. He emphasised that house prices rise every year and people must buy the houses as owning property is the best form of investment. He expressed concern about people using BHC houses for other  purposes like small businesses, garages and bars. He warned that BHC would take legal action against such people.
