BCL hosts Flash Furnace congress delegation

SELEBI-PHIKWE: BCL mine on Tuesday hosted for the very first time, delegates of the 13th International Flash Smelting Congress. This is the first time the conference has come to Africa.

The 13th International Flash Smelting Congress is taking place in Livingstone, Zambia, but participants have been allowed to visit operations at the BCL mine. Botswana and Zambia are the only two countries in Africa with such operations.

The BCL mine is also one of the oldest installations and one of the biggest in size. The mine's operation had been the only flash smelting facility in Africa since 1973, before the Zambian operation was commissioned in 2008. Asset Management divisional manager, Keenlord Dube, said hosting a congress of such a magnitude is a dream come true for BCL mine which has been participating in the past congresses even during crunch financial times. He added that the ideas and experiences BCL acquired from the past congresses have been put to good use. He further noted that the visit by delegates would enable the mine to showcase some of the improvements it made as a result of its participation in past flash furnace congresses.
