Batshu commends mines for reduced fatalities

SOWA TOWN: Fatal injuries went down from 10 to two between 1998 and mid-2013, Minister of Labour and Home Affairs Edwin Batshu said last week here at an event to celebrate five million fatality free shifts by Botswana Ash.

"The number of fatal accidents over the same period has also decreased from 73 to 16 over the same period which is an impressive record," he said.Notably, jobs in the mining sector increased by 25 percent in the past 15 years, Batshu also said that the impressive statistics show that all stakeholders in the mining industry are putting significant effort in improving safety and health in the country's mining sector, especially in the reduction of severe injuries and fatalities.

"This decrease in injurious incidents over the years is indeed commendable but there is no room for complacency.Your attitude of zero tolerance with respect to unsafe acts and omissions must continue as this is the only way to maintain your good record," he said. The first step in eliminating fatal incidents, he said, would be to identify all the risks of fatal incidents and systematically design protocols to eliminate them."Where risks cannot be eliminated, the next step is to substitute the material or process to reduce the risk. If this too cannot be done, a complete re-design of the process to reduce the risk must follow.
