Banking sector focuses on rising fraud

The country's 12 banks this week step up anti-fraud activities, with their regulator, the Bank of Botswana (BoB) warning of a "worrisome rising trend in cases over the years".

Under the biennial Banking Week, which for this year started yesterday, the country's commercial, merchant and statutory banks, as well as their association and regulator are launching an intensive anti-fraud education campaign.

"There have been incidences of unauthorised cash withdrawals from customers' bank accounts at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), identity theft, scanning and cloning of bank credit cards and cheque forgery," said BoB governor, Linah Mohohlo in a statement released ahead of Banking Week.
