Auto-repair giants challenge Competition Commission

The Competition Commission on Thursday postponed judgement in a matter in which four auto-repair giants have charged that the Commission cannot adjudicate over their price fixing allegations as its relationship with the Competition Authority gives the appearance of bias.

Last year, the Authority dragged CarWorld, Carfill, Specialised Panel Beaters and Top Care before the Commission for adjudication, after an investigation allegedly proved price-fixing and collusion among the four. The Authority accused the four, who are among the biggest repair shops in their industry, of fixing prices and colluding in the issuance of quotations to insurance firms, falsely giving the appearance of independence.

By law, the four firms were each facing fines comprising 10% of each one’s annual turnover for each year of price-fixing, but not exceeding three years.
