An entrepreneur from humble beginnings

FRANCISTOWN: When a fresh-faced Rebecca Geche ditched a well paying job as a nurse at the Orapa Mine Hospital to set up her own business back in 1994 no one gave her a chance.

But today the 56-year old has since become an entrepreneur of no mean repute, forcing her detractors to eat humble pie. Prior to coming to Orapa, Geche worked at Athlone Hospital in Lobatse from 1980 to 1986. In 1986, she joined the Debswana's Orapa Hospital.

Geche was 38 years old in 1994 when she ventured into business as the sole proprietor of 'Ree Fashions'. She started the business at home with her lifetime savings. Five years later, in 1999 to be precise, she obtained a grant from the now defunct Financial Assistance Policy (FAP) to set up a business in Letlhakane. The business now operates at the Local Entrepreneurship Authority (LEA) incubators' complex located in the Francistown light industrial area. The incubators were commissioned three years ago.Ree Fashions manufactures protective clothing for local companies particularly mines, hospitals, tourist companies and hotels. The business also does logo embroidery on protective clothing for local firms. "Though Ree Fashions started operating from home in Orapa, it really picked up to another level when the firm was established in Letlhakane in 1999.
