Africans resent criticism of 'snooty' evaluators - Director

A director in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) says countries are dragging their feet with their anti-money laundering reports because they fear harsh assessments by the international bodies like the World Bank and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Ellen Madisa, the Director of Finance at MFDP, says what came out during the closed session of the Eastern and Southern African Anti-money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) conference at the Gaborone International Convention Centre last week is that most countries cannot take harsh criticism from the group's evaluators.

"They feel they are being assessed as if they are first class countries and that the assessors do not seem to see anything positive in Africa's efforts against funding terrorism and money laundering," Madisa said in an interview at the end of the meeting of the Task Force of senior officials that preceded that of finance ministers.
